Viagra: The Magic Pill for Men with ED

Viagra It used to be that erectile dysfunction was often described as any man's termination of happiness. After all, when one begins to suffer from erectile dysfunction, there is no joy at all in being a man. Thankfully, Pfizer came with a small blue wonder pill more than a decade ago. Popularly known as Viagra, the pill became an instant hit. It also became the butt of several ridicule and criticisms. But perhaps the greatest sign that Viagra really works is that it spurred a lot of imitations in the market, all seeking to at least come close to the benefits that Viagra gives.

How Does It Work?

The main active ingredient in Viagra is sildenafil citrate. The main effect of sildenafil citrate in the body is that it affects the work of enzymes in the body. In particular, sildenafil citrate affects the performance of phosphodiesterase 5 or PDE5. PDE5 is an enzyme that speeds up chemical reactions in the body, particularly in the penis. There, it speeds up the metabolism of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), another enzyme critical for the attainment of erection. In a natural state, there is always the chance that PDE5 will burn off cGMP. This will result to erection being short-lived. In worst-case scenarios, erection is entirely impossible.

Viagra works by enhancing the ability of the cGMP and to increase its production. Once there is enough of this erection-inducing enzyme, the result is the arteries in the penis will become smoother and relaxed. This is preparation for the increased blood flow and volume anticipated. Because of the ability to hold higher blood levels, erection is attained. More importantly, sildenafil citrate prevents the blood from circulating out of the penile area. As a result, one is able to have his penis hard longer for a more pleasurable sexual experience.

How Long Does It Work?

Viagra is not one of the several drugs considered by many as weekend pills, the group of pills that causes a person to have erection for around two days. Often, the effects of Viagra can be enjoyed for only a couple of hours (4 hours is the average). While this may sound as too short for pleasure, this is done mainly for health reasons. It must be remembered that every time a man has an erection represents the same length of time when the blood vessels are dilated. When the blood vessels are dilated for a very long period of time, the result is that it may lose its flexibility and it may have difficulty returning back to its original state. This situation becomes more serious as one ages. With the comparatively short time frame wherein Viagra is in effect, there is no danger that a man will have problems with his blood vessels.

Taking Viagra is no hassle. Simply pop one and down it with a glass of water. Take at least an hour before sexual activity to enjoy the effects. On the other hand, make sure to consult with a doctor first before taking it.
