generic cipro

cipro
Cipro, coming with such generic name as Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride, is an antibiotic meant to inhibit the replication of microbial DNA and to stop the spread of bacteria.
The drug can be effective only for definite groups of bacteria infections. Before prescribing Cipro for some infections, numerous lab tests are required.

Uses or Indications

The medication is usually prescribed to treat abdominal infections, the lower respiratory tract infections, as well as infections of bones, skin, joints and urinary tract (cystitis including). Cipro can be also applied to typhoid fever, inhaled anthrax, serious bronchial and sinus infections, gonorrhea, prostate gland infections and infectious diarrhea. In some cases Cipro is recommended to patients suffering from severe ear infections, infections that are common to AIDS sufferers and tuberculosis.

How to take Cipro

The drug is available both in liquid and tablet. The suspension Cipro HC Otic (ear drops) contains hydrocortisone - the anti-inflammatory drug - and is meant to treat ear infection outwardly.

Cipro can be taken either with food or on an empty stomach. While taking this medication the patient should drink much liquid; otherwise crystals may be formed in the urine.

Even if the patient feels better after using Cipro for several days, he/she should take the full dosage, in order to kill all bacteria. Otherwise, the bacteria can become resistant to the medication and similar antibiotics, making them ineffective for treatment.

Side effects

Abdominal discomfort and pain, headache, nausea, diarrhea, rash, vomiting and restlessness are the most common side effects. In case you noticed one of them developing, see your doctor immediately.

Drug Precautions

  • If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to Cipro or certain other antibiotics like norfloxacin, ofloxacin, and trovafloxacin, you should avoid this medication. In case you have some special reactions, you should inform your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Cipro HC Otic suspension isn't recommended to patients with perforated eardrum or with a viral infection of the ear.
  • Cipro may provoke dizziness or light-headedness. That is why any activity requiring mental alertness, like operating heavy machinery or driving, isn't desirable.
  • Cipro can result in increased pressure within the brain. In some cases patients who took this drug suffered from convulsions.
  • The patient may become hypersensitive to light while under this drug.
  • The effect of Cipro on pregnant women has not been studied properly. If you are pregnant or plan to be one, inform your doctor before taking Cipro.
  • Lab tests showed that Cipro appears in breast milk and could have a negative impact on a breastfed infant. Your doctor is likely to advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment is completed.

Drug Interactions

  • Avoid mixing Cipro with yogurt and milk, though calcium taken as part of a full meal has no significant effect on the drug.
  • Cipro may increase the effects of caffeine.
  • Don't mix Cipro with theophylline and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), except Aspirin.
  • Cipro taken with such drugs as drugs Cyclophosphamide, Cyclosporine, Glyburide, Methotrexate, Metoclopramide, Metoprolol Phenytoin, Probenecid and Warfarin, reduce their efficacy.

Missed Dose

If you missed a dose, you should take the drug as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, you should skip the dose you missed and then resume your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses to make up for a missed dose.

Overdosage

There is no special data concerning the symptoms of Cipro overdose. However, any drug taken in excess can result in serious consequences. If you took an excessive dose, seek medical help immediately.

Storage

Cipro tablets should be stored at room temperature. Cipro suspension can be stored at room temperature or in the fridge. The suspension can be used within 14 days. Protect Cipro HC Otic suspension from freezing and keep away from light.
